    Synthesis and Characterization of Six Luminous Mononuclear Cobalt(II)-Pseudohalide Complexes Containing Schiff Bases

  • Abstract

    Two new Schiff bases, N-((pyridin-2-yl)formylidene)benzyl-amine (L1) and N-((pyridin-2-yl)benzylidene)benzylamine (L2) have been prepared. Two series of hexacoordinated cobalt(II)-pseudohalide complexes of type [Co(L)2(X)2] (L: L1 ; X = N3-, 1a; X = NCS-, 2a; X = NCO-, 3a and L: L2; X = N3-, 1b; X = NCS-, 2b; X = NCO-, 3b) have been synthesized using a 1:2:2 molar ratio of the metal(II) perchlorate, organic blocker (L1/L2) and pseudohalide (X) in methanolic solutions through self-assembly and characterized. In MeOH solutions they behave as non-electrolytes as reflected in their low ΛM (~5 Ω-1 cm2 mol-1) values. Room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of all the cobalt(II) compounds show three-electron paramagnetism with μ eff value ~3.8 BM. . In CV, a quasi-reversible one-electron oxidative response due to cobalt(III)-cobalt(II) couple is observed in all complexes. All the complexes display intraligand 1(π- π*) fluorescence and intraligand 3(π- π*) phosphorescence in glassy solutions (MeOH at 77 K).
